Things that bug MadIce
DX 1.1 not only includes the new scripting facility, but also has a media player called StardockPlayer. Unlike other players it does not have its own skinning format. Instead it is skinned by DesktopX. Later on it can be skinned by ObjectBar and WindowBlinds too.

The player supports various audio, MIDI, movie and image formats. It has a size of 170KB and will take up about 4.5 to 7MB RAM. It requires DirectX 8.x to run and can use regular Windows codecs.

The player is in early development and still not complete. DXPlayer comes along with it and a sample DesktopX BlackAndBlue sample player tray has been included. DXPlayer not only supports SDPlayer, but works fine with WinAmp and CoolPlayer too.

There is even a SDPlayer SDK for C++ writers to make their own remotes.

outstanding!

however, one little question. i was looking at this last night, but was unable to control the SD player via desktopX. how do i do this?

it is a real pain trying to fully control SD player via the impressively long right click menu from the system tray.

i have never really used desktopX (since i can never normally find my desktop under all the windows ) so i may have missed something basic.

i loaded the DX player object by someone called MadIce (who you may have heard of ). however, even when the SD player was playing some mp3 tracks none of the buttons on the blue bar (this is the correct DX item isnt it?) had any effect. i havent yet tried this with coolplayer since i dont yet have coolplayer on that machine.

do i need to use desktopX 1.10rc2 for this? i notice that this has just gone up, while i was trying this in desktopX 1.10rc1

The problem is that the object requires double clicking. I'm going to modify it so that single clicking will do it.

Feline: That is odd. The object on my machine works with single clicks. And if it does not respond then maybe the player has been moved. The player should be in the SDPlayer folder of Object Desktop. To reinstall (just for the security) terminate the player and double click SDPlayer.exe. DXPlayer should then be able to find it.

MadIce you say? Never heard of him. Weird name, BTW.

Another possibility. If you start an MP3 file by double clicking it then another player will play it. Probably WinAmp in your case. Terminate WinAmp and drag the MP3 or movie file to the viewer. Probably that will make it work

On the news groups another user had problems with objects responding to double clicks too. I also have another object (not player related) which contains several buttons. Some of them are activated by single clicks and others by double clicks. I think this is a DX bug and have nothing to do with my player.

strange, and interesting.
i simply did an install and then run of SD player and DX, so there is no reason for SD player to be anywhere other than in the normal place. however, i will check that tonight.

i only tried single clicking the buttons, so perhaps that is the problem. i had started SP player manually, and fed it a load of mp3 files via its playlist, so as to make sure that it was running.

does the order of launching matter?
i launched SP player *before* i launched desktopX. do i need to run them in a specific order?

Found it: "Start with" should be set to Single click and not normal.

The order is unimportant. You are probably right in that the double click was the problem.

MadIce - Found it: "Start with" should be set to Single click and not normal.

is this something simple that a desktopX novice (that would be me ) can easily edit?

on a related front, i have the memory of a mainly light (or pale) blue, roundish, desktopX object with a cetral button, and several surounding buttons, that was an mp3 player. not only that, i thought that it was one of your cunning creations.

am i getting this mixed up with something else, or did screen shots of this this really once get posted?

i have just hunted though wincustomize, and havent found anything that matches my memory of this item.

Nope. My BlackAndBlue object was until now the only one. I have seen a nice one from Werewolf he made recently, but that one was yellow and red

i have no idea what i am remembering then

after some experimentation i have solved the not working problem. setting all the buttons in the player to accept single clicks does it. aso setting the global DX setting to single click will do it, but i am going off that already
